Mishna Pe'a 1:1 – Vol. I, pp. 24 - 26
It is the custom of all Jews to read the Mishna "These are the things that have no fixed measure..." and the Mishna "These are the things that a man enjoys their dividends [in This World]..." The Mishna text says "their dividends..." but in the Land of Israel and in Syria, Togarma, and Egypt they say "of their dividends..." [According to Blackman (1951) p. 82, both are acceptable variants.]

For this section, it will be helpful to view our pop-up guide to the textual variants of Mishnah Pe'a 1:1, which is available in English and Hebrew.
Throughout, the translation methodology values the original syntax above textual fluency to better reflect the nature of the variations.
The aforementioned Mishna is from Pe'a 1:1 (and also appears on Kiddushin 39b - 40a, and Shabbat 127a), yet in the original text, the phrase "...that a man does" is absent, and it just says "...that a man enjoys their dividends." Only in the Talmud on Kiddushin 40a does it say that a man "does" them; but even on 39b the word is omitted, and you will not find the letter Vav [meaning "and"] before the word "enjoys," although it is present on 40a. I do not know why Rabba added this extra phrase that is not mentioned in our Mishna. Had he said "[These are the things] that a man who does them [enjoys their dividends, etc.]" then there would have been a causal relationship with the words that follow, as if to say that if a man does these mitsvot, then he will enjoy their dividends in This World, etc. But if we leave the version [in Kiddushin] as it stands – that is to say, in an imperative manner – we see that there are some people who are not careful to observe these behaviors [even though they should]!

I also found many textual changes in this Mishna in both the version used by Sephardim and that used by Ashkenazim. This is the text of the Sephardim: "Honoring one's father and mother, and acts of loving kindness, and visiting the sick, and welcoming guests, and rising early to the synagogue, and making peace between man and his fellow and between man and his wife; but the study of Torah is equal to them all." In total, there are seven behaviors (but in Mishna Pe'a 1:1 there are only four. They omitted "visiting the sick, welcoming guests, and rising early to the synagogue"; and you will not find the love "between man and his wife" in the Mishna). Only on Kiddushin 39b do you find "welcoming guests." On Shabbat 127a the text reads, "Rab Yehuda bar Shila quoted Rab Asi, who quoted Ribbi Yohanan: 'Six things a man enjoys their dividends in This World... welcoming guests, and visiting the sick, and consideration of prayer, and rising early to the Study House, and one who rears his children in Torah, and one who judges his friend favorably.'" (Ribbi Yohanan left out "honoring one's father and mother, and making peace"). They challenge this in the Talmud by saying "these are included and these are not?!" [and the response is] "the excluded are covered by the included" (cf. Rashi there). The text of Ashkenaz is very similar to [Ribbi Yohanan], except that at "rising early to the Study House" they add "morning and evening," which does not appear in any Siddur that I have at hand (meaning, the early Siddurim). In the Talmud [Shabbat 127a] it only mentions "rising early" to the Study House since this implies the morning, as in "Abraham rose early in the morning" [Genesis 19:27], so it does not make sense to include the evening! (I recall that in Jerusalem, the city of my birth, they would describe it as "rising early and coming late to the the synagogues and Study Houses" – "rising early" for the morning and "coming late" for the evening! That is actually how we pray in the prayer (p. 7) "happy are we who rise early and come late to the synagogues and Study Houses.") In the text of Askhenaz, you will find that ten behaviors are included.

If we look in the Seder Hangmrami (Frumkin, p. 42) it says that after we recite the Baraita of Ribbi Yishmangel until "...and resolves the contradiction," we say this Mishna according to the version of Mishna Pe'a 1:1, which mentions four behaviors and no more. In the Rambam's Siddur (which is published in the Yad Hazaka after Hilkhot Mila) there is a different version: "after we read from Parashat Tsav, we read this Mishna: '...and they are: honoring one's father and mother, and acts of loving kindness, and consideration of prayer, and visiting the sick, and rising early to the Study House, and welcoming guests, and making peace between man and his fellow; but the study of Torah is equal to them all,'" which includes eight behaviors. You can see that not only did Rambam depart from the text of Mishna Pe'a 1:1 and the [very similar] Ngamrami, but also that even if he was following the version of Ribbi Yohanan in Shabbat [127a], he left out two behaviors that Ribbi Yohanan brought – "one who rears his children in Torah, and one who judges his friend favorably." Moreover, how could Rambam say "we read this Mishna" as though all the extra details he mentioned actually appear in the text of the Mishna, when the truth is that they were added by Ribbi Yohanan?!

Given that I see great confusion in this, with such major differences between the all of the variants that neither the text of the Sepharadim nor that of the Ashkenazim – nor even of Rambam – fits the versions in our Mishna and Gemara, I have laid out the matter before the student and opened up a small hole like the eye of a needle so that perhaps he could resolve the different versions [where I could not]. The truth is that it is extremely surprising that we don't say the Mishna as it appears in Pe'a 1:1. While both Sephardim and Ashkenazim add "visiting the sick" and "welcoming guests," etc., these are included in "acts of loving kindness;" there is no real need to spell out the details, since if we were to do so they would add up to an unwieldy sum! For example, [we could specify] charity, redeeming captives, comforting mourners, accompanying the dead, and bringing [brides] to the wedding canopy [ad infinitum]. Also, when [the Sephardic Siddur text] adds "making peace between man and his wife," we already know this from a Kal Vahomer on "...between man and his friend" – for on the subject of love between man and his wife, Ribbi Yishmangel said: "great is peace, for we find that the Holy One, Blessed be He, waived the prohibition of erasing the sacred written form of His name [in the Sota ritual] so as to keep peace between man and his wife" (Perek Hashalom 9; and cf. Shabbat 116a, Makkot 11a, Nedarim 66b, and Sukka 53b [text says 23b]). The Sephardic custom is to say this Mishna after the Ribbono Shel Ngolam, and the Ashkenazic custom is to say it before Birkhot Hashahar, while that of the Ngamrami is to say it after the Baraita of Ribbi Yishmangel as I wrote above.
