When is our Judgement Finally Sealed? – Vol. VII, pp. 142 - 143
Some people ask: how can it be that [our judgment] is sealed on the day of Hoshangana Rabba? Doesn't the sealing happen at Nengilah on Kippur, since we say "seal us [in the Book of Life]" in place of "inscribe us"? Are there two different sealings?

This question cannot be resolved according to the straightforward reading [of rabbinic texts], for Our Rabbis have already reported: 1) "Ribbi Yohanan said, 'three books are opened on Rosh HaShanah: one for the completely wicked, one for the completely righteous, and one for the intermediate cases. The completely righteous are inscribed and sealed immediately for life; the completely wicked are inscribed and sealed immediately for death; and the intermediate cases are left open from Rosh HaShanah until Kippur (meaning, the Ten Days of Repentance) – if they are meritorious, they are inscribed for life, and if they are not meritorious, they are inscribed for death.'"

What can be inferred from Ribbi Yohanan's words is that the righteous are sealed immediately for life and the wicked are sealed immediately for death (meaning, after being judged in the Heavenly Court on Rosh HaShanah itself), while the intermediate cases are left suspended until Kippur during the Ten Days of Repentance, so that if they repent sincerely they will be inscribed and sealed for life, and if they are not meritorious they will be inscribed and sealed for death – may it not strike us! If so, then the sealing happens either on Rosh HaShanah itself or at the end of the day on Kippur, which makes it odd that the Geonim would ordain for us to say "seal us" at Nengilah in place of "inscribe us," given that some have already been sealed for eternal life and some for eternal disgrace! [Translator's note: Rabbi Gaguine's use of Daniel 12:2 here indicates that the judgement under discussion refers to our fate in the World to Come; cf. Tosafot s.v. "venehtamin," Rosh HaShanah 16b.] It is thus even more surprising that on Hoshangana Rabba we increase our penitential prayers and Shofar blasts, and stay up late on the previous night to study the source texts of the day – all for the sake of being favorably sealed!

However, this question can be answered through esotericism according to the writings of Rabbi Isaac Luria of blessed memory. I will not bring the content of what he said here, for not one in a thousand understands – or is even capable of understanding – his words appropriately! Hence, I will only list their citations in his books: see Sefer Peri Ngets Hayyim 2) and Sefer Shangar HaKavanot, 3) where one can find how this question is answered "with good discernment and knowledge" [Psalms 119:66].

Others answer as follows: although the fate of all life is sealed at Negilah, the Books are not yet delivered to the [Heavenly Court] messengers; this does not happen until Hoshangana Rabba, at which point the lives of mankind in our comings and goings are finally sealed for good or ill. This is the reason why we increase our penitential prayers and supplications, etc. to make it like Kippur; and we light candles, for "the soul of man is the lamp of the lord" [Proverbs 20:27] – and this is an ancient answer [3a].
