Rosh HaShanah, Kippur, and Yetsi'at Mitsrayim – Vol. VI, p. 86
I was asked: On all of the Three Festivals, we say "a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt" in both the Ngamidah and the Kiddush; we also say this on Rosh HaShanah and Kippur, yet these Days of Judgment have nothing to do with the Exodus!

This was my answer to the questioner: You are right to inquire into the relationship between Rosh HaShanah & Kippur and the Exodus, since there really are no Scriptural verses about these Days of Awe that cite the Exodus in the way that is done for Pesah, Shabungot, and Sukkot. Nevertheless, it is proper to say "a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt" on these days because of what is taught in the Talmud: 542) [in the debate where] Ribbi Elingezer claims that "the world was created in Tishre," 543) he adds that 544) "on Rosh HaShanah, the labor of our ancestors in Egypt ceased" (Rashi explains: their subjugation ended six months before they were redeemed) – and Ribbi Yehoshuang does not argue against this [when trying to prove that the world was created in Nisan]. Moreover, when the Torah speaks about freeing the slaves on Kippur, it says "remember that you were a slave." 545) We know that this took place on Kippur because the Talmud cites it in the name of Ribbi Yishmangel son of Ribbi Yohanan ben Beroka, based on the fact that the verse "proclaim with the Shofar" applies to Kippur. 546) [In his exact words,] "once Kippur arrived, the Bet Din would sound the Shofar, and the slaves were dismissed to their homes." 547) See also the Shibbole HaLeket, 548) where he brings additional insight from his brother, Binyamin.

I have now laid before you the great connection between Rosh HaShanah & Kippur and the Exodus from Egypt. It was no mere accident that our Rabbis, the Men of the Great Assembly, established that every occasion that transpired for the Jews should function as a remembrance of the Exodus, for they perceived that almost all of the commandments in the Torah revolve around the recollection of this event. It was surely the greatest and most wondrous single moment in the history of our people, and its remembrance is a central principle of the Jewish faith, as the first commandment in the Decalogue attests: "I am the Lord your God Who took you out of the Land of Egypt." 549) In the Sifre, 550) a wonderful parable can be found in which Our Sages of blessed memory compared the Jews to a child of the friend of a king who is taken captive [and redeemed].
