Haham Gaguine's Preface to Vol. III – Section III, pp. x - xii
[Translator's note: because the Preface is so long, it will become available serially]
Withal, there have actually been a number of Jewish sects prior to Reform that have also sought to undermine the Torah of the Jews and their received traditions, and the outcome was discord and damage to the nation.

From the time that the Kingdom of Israel was divided into Judah and Ephraim and they became two separate religious sects, the heart of the nation (save Judah) was turned toward paganism, and the sin of Yarobngam ben Nebat became a stumbling block and a gag for the Kingdom of Israel throughout its duration. Yet the inhabitants of Judah cleaved to God, while those in Ephraim assimilated into the nations and acculturated. As the Prophet said, "Ephraim encompassed Me with lies, and the House of Israel with deceit; but Judah is still wayward towards God." 18)

The end result for Ephraim was that they became utterly lost from the world, and God "cast them into another land, as it is this day" [Deuteronomy 29:27]. Our Sages of blessed memory recorded in the name of Ribbi Halbo that "[reveling in] the wine of Perugita and the water of Diyomsit cut off the Ten Tribes from Israel;" 19) they assimilated amongst the nations of the world and were lost to the faithful, so that their whereabouts are unknown until this day. This is not true of the Tribes of Judah and Levi, which still exist today! [20a] Verily, they are the subject of the prophetic promise: "for as the new heaven and the new earth that I will make shall remain before Me, says the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain" 20), for they are the source of the Priests and Levites, who seize upon the Torah.

Rambam wrote 21) that "there are some among the ancient nations whose name remains while their descendants do not, and others whose descendants remain while their name does not. This does not apply to the House of Judah, whose descendants and name remain forever."
|

Moreover, the reader will be quite impressed to learn what the Christian sage and priest wrote in his book 22), which I shall copy forthwith: "The current status of the Jewish people is beneath the Christians and Muslims, yet the enlightened nations are utterly amazed at the marvel before their eyes, for of all the great civilizations that existed in ancient times, such as Assyria, Egypt, Persia, and Rome, nothing remains today, and they have gone from the world; yet Israel, a small and meager people, still survives on earth after nearly seventeen hundred years, despite being exiled and scattered to the ends of the earth and far-off islands, where they live in bondage, tribulation, and distress! This cannot be the doing of any save for the hand of God, Who sustains them in order to fulfill the Scriptural promise in the Books of the Prophets."

|
Actually, this priest was not the only one to express surprise at the status of the Jewish people, for both our enemies and our allies, and all who have done research in the history of nations, are astonished that the Jews and their Torah continue to exist, centuries after they ceased to be a unified nation with a shared language, and notwithstanding all the massacres, murders, and expulsions from which they continue to suffer. With each passing wave, their head rolls and picks itself up, standing erect like a solid rock; 'though half of us have perished, they still endure!' What is more, their light and sheen have not diminished with the winds of time, which wear down and destroy everything; on the contrary, they carry the Written Torah and their faithful traditions with an upraised hand in every place wither they are banished. Perhaps as little as one percent of it has been lost [through all those travails], be it out of our love of glory, or through the airs that we adopt to make a name for God on earth!

I will hereby list some of the principal sectarian divisions that occurred in Judaism. I cannot write at length because time does not agree with me, and I must be sparing in the resources required for this publication, which have risen a hundredfold.

6) "Kabbala." Since its inception and spread amongst the Jews, it has prompted the division of Jewish sages into two camps, the Talmudists and the Esotericists, as the former feared lest investigations of the divine swallow up the study of the Talmud and Posekim. Among the first rabbis to raise a complaint against Kabbalah were the Rashba and Rabbi Moshe ben Hasdai Taku; and when the Zohar was distributed (Parts 1-60, in 1300), many from the Torah party rose up against it, since they found that it opposed some of the rulings in the Talmud. Once it was released in print, many great rabbis were moved to cry foul against its publication, and enjoined that it be sequestered directly to the Genizot. 24)
|

11) The divergence of customs between the Jews of Iraq and the Jews of the Land of Israel. The first to anthologize these differences was Moharshal, 26) which Rabbi J. These are the cracks that have appeared in the walls of the House of Israel over the past several centuries. They have caused much confusion among the Jewish nation in the realms of practical religion and the obligation of individual Jews to their Torah and their people.
