The Correct Version of Ha Lahma Ngania – Vol. III, p. 118
What is the most accurate and correct version, "ha lahma" or "ha ke-lahma" or "ke-ha lahma"?
|
איזהו הנוסח המדויק והנכון "הא-לחמא" או "הא-כלחמא" או "כהא לחמא"ו
|
The version of the Sepharadim is "ha lahma," as attested in the Ngmrami 1), Rambam 2), Manhig 3), Rabbi Don Yits'hak Abrabanel 4), Rabbi David Abudarham 5), Mahzor Vitry 6), and the Kol Bo 7); as compared to the Haggada of the Ashkenazim, who have "keha" lahma. In the Siddur of Rab Sangadia Gaon 8) I was greatly surprised that he omits the words "ha lahma ngania" entirely and starts "this year we are here, next year in the Land of Israel; this year we are slaves, next year free people. May all who are hungry come and eat; may all who are needy come and celebrate the Pesah. And he asks Ma Nishtana etc."

Let us investigate why in the Ashkenazi version they say keha lahma: it is because the matsa from the Seder is not the actual matsa that our ancestors ate in Egypt, but rather an imitation of that bread, signified with the prefix "kaf," meaning "like." Yet this import can also be taken from our Sephardic version, i.e., "this poor bread that we eat tonight is the type of bread that our ancestors ate," and it is said to emphasize the poverty aspect. The Yangabets 9) agreed that both versions are acceptable, see there.

|
According to his view that the version "keha" is also acceptable, they ought to take out the word "di" so that it reads "a bread like this poor bread was eaten by our ancestors." The Magen Abraham 10) had difficulty treating the versions of ha lahma, and concluded by saying that those who write ke-lahma or ke-ha-lahma did not lose anything.
|
ולפי דבריו שאם גם הנוסחא כהא, היא גי' נכונה, צריכים הם להשמיט תיבת "די" וצ"ל "כהא לחמא עניא אכלו אבהתנא" והמג"א 10) נתקשה בנוסח הא לחמא, וסיים לומר להאומרים הא כלחמא או כהלחמא לא הפסיד עכ"ל

Rabbenu David Abudarham (ibid.) wrote that in the Mahzor Vitry it asks why it doesn't say hai lahma, since bread is masculine and ha is feminine, and it answers that we do have a case in the Talmud where ha is used for a man: ha gabra veha tiyubteh - "this is the man and this is his refutation" 11). [Author's note: the text is also ha gabra veha daska - "document"]. However I looked in the Mahzor Vitry and was unable to find the citation. It must be that the copy before the Abudarham had this passage, while in the current text it has been omitted.

|
Yet Rab Mate Moshe 12) wrote that "one should not mix up the versions and say keha lahma or kehalahma because the language of the verse is 'in order that they may see the bread that I fed you [in the wilderness when I brought you out from the land of Egypt'] 13), and therefore it must be according to the old version ha lahma." It is hard to suit his words to the case, because this verse was said about the Manna. There it also says "let one Ngomer of it be kept throughout the ages," and commands us to keep it in a basket. Perhaps the basket was made of glass, and the physical Manna from that period could be seen through the pane. Nevertheless in the ha lahma of Pesah it is not literally same bread that our ancestors ate, and hence there is no real evidence from this verse.

According to the discipline of Kabbala, these three words, keha lahma Ngania, add up to 216 in Gematria, which is the three verses Vayisa-Vayabo-Vayet 14). These form 72 triads of God's name for a total of 216 letters, and the Israelites went forth from Egypt by the strength of this name 15). This works if we say keha according to the Ashkenazi version, but if we use the Sephardi ha lahma the count goes off, as it does if we use the version ha ke-lahma 16). [Translator's note: this would appear to be in error: keha lahma ngania is 236, and goes down to the desired 216 in the Sephardi version.]

ולפי החכמת הקבלה כי ג' תיבות אלו כהא לחמא עניא גימטריא רי"ו שהוא ג' פסוקים ויסע ויבא ויט 14) שהם ע"ב שמות שהם רי"ו אותיות, ובכח השם הזה יצאו ממצרים 15) וזה אם נגרוס כהא כנוסח אשכנז, אבל אם נגרוס כנוסח ספרד הא לחמא יתקלקל החשבון, וכן אם נגרוס הא כלחמא 16)ו
